SensorThings API Good Practice

OGC SensorThings API (STA) is an exciting new standard for the provision of observational and measurement data within an SDI such as INSPIRE. While in many ways similar to the OGC Sensor Observation Service (SOS), it provides similar functionality in a far more usable manner. This foremost is due to

  • RESTful API following the OASIS OData model makes for easier interaction with the service interface
  • JSON encoding of a simplified Observations and Measurements (O&M) data model makes for far easier data encoding and consumption

Last year, we took first steps toward incorporating this new standard within INSPIRE. We've done the requisite alignment between STA and the requirements stemming from the INSPIRE IRs pertaining to O&M as well as Environmental Monitoring Facilities (EF) detailed in our paper on “Extending INSPIRE to the Internet of Things through SensorThings API” (doi:10.3390/geosciences8060221). Now we are initiating an INSPIRE Good Practice in order to clarify remaining alignment issues pertaining to the INSPIRE Download Service requirements, as well as to deploy several STA based services within INSPIRE as an example for others to follow.

We've collected all relevant information on the DataCove GitHub on SensorThings, see the folder INSPIRE: https://github.com/DataCoveEU/SensorThings

If you or your organization are interested in participating, please contact us via the INSPIRE Cluster pages or the GitHub.

Looking forward to interesting new insights!
