The annual EFGS conference is coming to Dublin in 2017!

Co-hosted by Central Statistics Office Ireland and Ordnance Survey Ireland, the conference will be held in Dublin Castlefrom November 2-3 2017 and intends to showcase the current work in the integration of statistics and geography under the following categories:

  • Open and Linked Data,
  • Visualisation of official statistics,
  • The United Nations Agendas for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Global Geospatial Information Management (GGIM),
  • INSPIRE,
  • Big Data and the Environment,
  • Census 2020 geography.

The European Forum for Geography and Statistics (EFGS) is a voluntary body which allows for the exchange of ideas among network of experts, mainly GIS specialists but also statisticians, researchers working in National Statistical Institutes (NSIs), experts from National Mapping and Cadastral Agencies (NMCAs) and also Eurostat, to provide spatial statistics for Europe. Also countries outside Europe are active in EFGS and therefore EFGS is aiming to establish a global forum.

The main goal of EFGS is to promote the integration of statistical and geospatial information and the use of GIS in public sector. In 2015 EFGS received the status of the official Observer Organization to UN-GGIM: Europe. EFGS also acts as a reference group to Eurostat and the project group for the GEOSTAT projects.

The annual EFGS conferences are one of the main events for raising awareness among the community. In recent years the conference has attracted an expanding attendance, with the 2016 Paris conference hosting participants from over 40 countries across all continents.

EFGS ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Creation of model for a point-based geocoding infrastructure for statistics as the base for the collection and dissemination of statistical data. The outline of this model is based on national practices and specific national challenges, and also takes into consideration the EU context (GEOSTAT 2 project)
  • Recommendations on the possible improvement of the GSBPM to make it more adequate from the point of view of geospatially related statistical production processes (GEOSTAT 2 project)

EFGS CURRENT WORK PROGRAMME

  • Development of the best practices in the production of geostatistics in Europe
  • Development of partnership between NSIs and NMCAs on equal terms
  • A fully geocoded 2021 population and housing census
  • A truly object oriented statistical-geospatial information system for Sustainable Development Goals from local to global level
  • Development of the European version of the Global Statistical Geospatial Framework (ESS-SGF) (GEOSTAT 3  project)

EFGS CHALLENGES

  • Harmonization statistical reference system with geodetic reference system on the base of The 10 Level Model” and Global Statistical Geospatial Framework (GSGF)
  • Supporting Eurostat and NSIs for a fully geocoded 2021 population and housing census
  • Introduce spatial aspects including GRID system to GSBPM model for modernization of statistical production
  • Spatial statistical indicators for Sustainable Development Goals
  • Preparing strategy for Global Forum for Geography and Statistics (GFGS)
